Bastia-born Joseph Chipponi signed professional forms with Stade Français at the end of the 1930s. A clinical finisher, he arrived to bolster the Stade Rennais attack in 1945. He was picked to play as Centre Forward as of Matchday 6 of the 1945/1946 First Division season, playing fifteen consecutive matches, before disappearing from the starting line-up, with Henri Guérin, who changed rôles from defender to become a striker. He would stay for just one year with Stade Rennais University Club, scoring 7 goals in 16 appearances in all. The following season saw his move to SCO Angers, along with the duo of Firoud and Raphy. He would spend three seasons there in the Second Division. He ended his playing days at CA Paris in 1950.
