Born in Uruguay, Juan José Duarte was midfielder who began his playing career in his native country, beginning with Nacional Montevideo in 1967. Having gained invaluable experience in Latin America, he chose to head to Europe in 1972, signing for Stade Rennais. Alas, he struggled to adapt, primarily as a result of medical problems. He would make just four appearances in Red and Black. His debut came in the starting line-up on 16th September 1972 for an away match at Marseille on Matchday 6 of the First Division season, which ended in a 0-3 defeat for Rennes. After that, there would be just one more appearance that season, and that was as a substitute. The following season picked up pretty much where the previous one had left off. One start, and one substitute's appearance was the sum total of his First-Team action. He would leave Rennes in 1974 to return home to Uruguay, where he would play for Penarol in Montevideo, Bella Vita, and Montevideo Wanderers. Duarte also achieved one cap in the Uruguayan National Team.
