On 26th January 2023, Stade Rennais signed Karl Toko Ekambi to bolster an attack weakened by long-term injuries to strikers Martin Terrier and Arnaud Kalimuendo, both sustained in early January. Toko Ekambi, who had won the African Cup of Nations in 2017 with Cameroon, joined Rennes on a loan deal, with the Red and Blacks paying Olympique Lyonnais 1.5 Million Euros in return for the striker's services. There was no buyout clause in the transaction. Toko Ekambi, who is capable of playing on the left side of the attack, as well as centre forward, had previously played for Sochaux, Angers and Villareal. Despite scoring a brace against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Europa League, Toko Ekambi was unable to prevent his team from being eliminated, but he also scored in Rennes' 2-0 victory over Paris Saint Germain at Parc des Princes in Ligue 1, and he was in the starting line-up for the run-in, and he returned to Lyon at the end of his loan period with a record of 5 goals and 2 assists, having helped the Red and Blacks to Europa League qualification.
