On Thursday 28 January 2016, Stade Rennais made the surprise signing of Kermit Erasmus. The South African international striker, equally adept with either foot, arrived in a squad which was already well-furnished with attacking options, with the likes of Ntep, Henrique, Grosicki, Boga or Dembélé, although only Sio was an out-and-out striker. The first South African in the history of Rennes signed for two seasons from Orlando Pirates, based in Johannesburg. After 12 mediocre displays, Erasmus was loaned to RC Lens for 6 months on the 20th January 2017. When he returned from his loan spell, neither Christian Gourcuff, nor his successor Sabri Lamouchi gave him an opportunity. On 8th February 2018, he cancelled his contract by mutual consent with 5 months still to run.
