In an attempt to bolster its attacking options, Stade Rennais signed Kujtim Shala at the end of the transfer window in 1991. The Croatian international striker arrived after two good seasons with Dynamo Zagreb, but had to wait a few weeks before playing his first match for Rennes, as the late conclusion of his transfer, meant that it took a while for the authorities to rubber-stamp the move. Didier Notheaux played him all the way across the front line in the Rennes attack, Shala didn’t succeed in showing his qualities over time. After 30 matches and 5 goals in Red and Black, he joined Sliskovic and Baltazar on the list of failed recruits, and was relegated with the club into the Second Division after losing the play-off against Strasbourg. Transferred to Stuttgarter Kickers in the summer of 1992, he immediately settled into the role of midfielder, much more in line with his qualities, and went on to make his career in Germany.
