Laurent Delamontagne was a pure product of the Rennes Academy system. Having arrived at the club aged 14, he made his professional debut in the French Second Division, 6 years later. At ease in all attacking positions, the younger brother of Patrick Delamontagne spent 7 years with the First Team squad. After a circumspect start in the top flight in the 1986/1987 season, he really launched his career the following season in the Second Division. Having scored 40 goals in 114 appearances in all competitions up to 1990, he had a second bite at the cherry in the First Division, albeit the two seasons were tough from a team perspective in 1990/1991 and 1991/1992. Following the subsequent renewed relegation to Division 2, he signed for Lyon in the summer of 1992. Despite his undoubted talent, and the values he represented during his 220 matches for the club, scoring 52 in the process, Laurent Delamontagne will be forever associated with the “yo-yo”* years of Stade Rennais. (*yo-yo" = relegation, promotion and relegation again at regular intervals)
