Léon Boesinger was born in Hégenheim, a village in the suburbs of Basel which belonged to Alsace. He began his playing days in amateur football in 1933 with FC Saint-Louis. A reliable player, he moved on to LO Villeurbanne the following season. In 1936, he had a trial with Olympique de Marseille, who thought they would sign him, but were beaten to his signature by Stade Rennais. At the time, his transfer was financed by l'Amicale du SRUC, a supporters' club of Stade Rennais. He would rapidly earn his spurs in the starting line-up at Rennes, playing mainly as one of the two players in central midfield, whilst helping out from time to time as wing-half on the left flank. In 1939, at the outbreak of the Second World War, he was called up by the French Army, and had to put his footballing career on hold for a year, before returning to play for Rennes. The model professional, Boesinger would remain at Rennes until 1945, before moving on to Grenoble, where he would see out the remaining years of his playing days as a pro in the Second Division. In his leisure time, Léon Boesinger was an excellent tailor, sometimes producing cushions out of wool and satin. He ended his career in football as player-manager with some amateur clubs closer to home, in the East of France.
