Lucien Aubey arrived in Rennes as part of the same deal as Mangane signing from RC Lens in July 2008. Unfortunately, for him – and Rennes - he didn’t manage to leave a lasting impression during his stay at the club. He was expected to be a regular in the starting line-up due to his versatility as a defender, but he ended up as second-choice in all positions he could play in. On the left, he was unable to dislodge Bocanegra, nor could he break up the pairing of Hansson and Mangane in the centre. Aubey became to main replacement to these players. When he did play, he put in workmanlike performances, and was rarely caught out, but his attacking contribution was virtually inexistent. He was an important man to have around the dressing room and was well-liked by his team-mates, but the Congolese international was the victim of the club’s change in direction at the beginning of 2010. The club decided to give more of an opportunity to new vintage of homegrown talent (Théophile-Catherine, Danzé and Souprayen in particular) and already had a new signing in the pipeline (Kana-Biyik), and as a consequence, Rennes allowed him to leave for a new start in Turkey.
