The Brazilian Vander arrived in Rennes in the same transaction with Ponte Petra as compatriot Fabiano in 2000. His spell at Rennes will be remembered more for his smile than for his performances on the pitch. He did however still demonstrate the qualities, in his willingness, his application and his versatility. Unfortunately, his stay in France started badly, when he fractured a foot in his debut in a Rennes shirt at Lyon. When he returned, Le Guen still put his faith in him, but the competition from the likes of Grégoire, Delaye, Bigné as well as Gourvennec and the blossoming youngster N’Diaye proved to be fatal for his future in Brittany. During the Summer, he had hoped that the arrival of a new Manager in the shape of Gourcuff, would help him get his place back, but the Breton coach, wasn’t a fan of Brazilian football, and only offered him the odd appearance as substitute. In the Winter transfer window, he was loaned out to Cruzeiro and his return to Brazil was made permanent at the end of the 2001/2002 season.
