After starting to play football at Le Rheu, Mathis Picouleau arrived at Stade Rennais aged 9, along with Wilson Isidor, who also came from the same town. In 2015, he joined the Academy, and received numerous call-ups with the French youth teams. Indispensible in each of the teams he played for club and country, he participated at the U17 World Cup with France. He was Captain of the UEFA Youth League team in the 2019/2020 season, but was only offered a one-year professional contract by Rennes at the end. Picouleau was a target for numerous professional clubs, and he signed for Valenciennes on 6th July 2020 for his first professional contract, having already made 35 appearances for France in the different age groups.
