During the close season in 2020, Stade Rennais fought off strong competition to sign Mathys Tel, who was playing for Montrouge. Aged just 15, this versatile player, at home in midfield or in attack, joined Rennes' Academy right in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. He turned professional on 1st July 2021, aged 16 years, 2 months and 4 days, and quickly caught the eye of First Team boss Bruno Genesio, who included him in the group, which he took to the club's pre-season training camp in Spain on the eve of the 2021/2022 season. With his first call-up to the Rennes First Team, at Brest on 15th August 2021, he broke the record of the youngest player in the history of the club to represent them, aged just 16 years, 3 months and 18 days. He would make nine other appearances in the 2021/2022 season, with a total of 89 minutes of gametime to his name. At the beginning of the Summer, following a successful campaign with France, winning the U17 European Championships, he was targeted by Bayern Munich. After long negotiations, Tel signed for the Bavarian club, in a record deal for his young age: 20 Million Euros with 8.5 Million Euros bonus.
