Having begun his career in football at Lorient, and then La Montagnarde, Maxime Bernauer joined the Stade Rennais Academy in 2013. Originally a central defender, he became more and more versatile during his time under Julien Stéphan. First of all, he played at right-back, then as a defensive midfielder. It is in this position that Bernauer obtained his first professional contract in April 2018. On 6th May 2018, he made his first appearance on the team sheet for the First Team against Strasbourg. After a full season playing in the Reserves, he was loaned to US Concarneau (National 1 – French 3rd Division) on 21st June 2019. After a promising season in Finistère, he signed for Le Mans on 10th June 2020, with a year on his contract still to run with the Red and Blacks.
