Maxime Brillault is a central defender who arrived at Stade Rennais FC aged 15. His path to progression was blocked by a generation of promising rivals for his position (Grégory Bourillon and Jacques Faty), he wasn’t retained in Brittany at the end of his apprenticeship at the Academy. He joined Niort, but wasn’t given any game time in the First Team during his time there either. After a spell at Orléans in CFA (the French 4th Division), he finally signed his first professional contract with Libourne in 2006, and had two full seasons in Ligue 2. In 2009, he joined Charleroi in Belgium, and had his best season, attracting the attention of a number of clubs in Ligue 1 in the process. Unfortunately, he was left out in the cold by his Belgian club, and never got to sign for a top flight club in France. He returned to Brittany in 2011, signing for Vannes.
