Mevlüt Erding had been a target for Stade Rennais since the Summer of 2009. The striker finally arrived in Brittany in January 2012. Highly appreciated by Manager Frédéric Antonetti, the Turkish international was the subject of a long soap opera before signing at Rennes. In July 2009, he had signed for his “beloved” Paris Saint Germain instead of going to Rennes when he left Sochaux. In August 2011, was due to leave Paris, and the Qatari Dollars, until an eleventh-hour u-turn after Paris Saint Germain were unsuccessful in their attempt to sign Borriello. But after just 141 minutes of game-time in the first half of the season, he finally succumbed to the temptation of moving to Rennes in a transfer worth 7.5 Million Euros, after Newcastle and Lille (the other interested parties) had already found their respective goalscorer. In total, Erding made 54 appearances, scoring 18 goals, a good average at a goal every three games. In August 2013, and despite scoring a memorable goal against Reims, he was transferred to Saint-Etienne.
