Spotted while playing for Amiens, Moussa Sow signed for Stade Rennais in 2003, and joined the generation who had just won the Gambardella Cup (French FA Youth Cup). After signing his first professional contract in the Summer of 2004, he was given his big break in Ligue 1 by Bölöni, and he made four appearances as substitute in the 2004/2005 season. The following season, in the French Cup, the French-Senegalese striker saved his side from humiliation, scoring a brace which turned the game around against minnows Corte. Despite winning the European Championships with the U19s in 2005, his real blossoming took longer than expected, which led the club to send him out to Sedan on loan for the 2007/2008 season. His loan spell did the trick, as when the striker returned to Brittany for the 2008/2009 season, he scored 13 goals, of which the winning goal in the Semi-Final of the French Cup at Grenoble (1-0 win). In 2009/2010, he struggled to deal with the competition from Bangoura, Gyan, Marveaux and Briand, and refused a contract extension with the club, quickly reaching a deal with Lille. With Lille, Sow became French Champion in 2011, and became top scorer in Ligue 1 with 25 goals.
