Olivier Thomert arrived from RC Lens in January 2007 for 4.5 Million Euros. The left-sided attacking midfielder replaced Monterrubio in the squad, the latter having gone in the other direction for 1.5 Million Euros. His physical profile and power, was the antithesis of his predecesseur who allied technical ability and pace. Often the subject of the displeasure of the home crowd because of his nonchalance and technical errors, Thomas still ended up having an interesting career with Rennes. Above all, he solidified the team as a unit, and did an enormous amount of work getting back to help out his defence, whilst also showing himself adept going forward, with assists or goals (Thomert netted a total of 10 times in 3 seasons.) Under Dréossi in the 2007/2008 season, he beat off the competition to play 31 matches, and then made 33 appearances under Lacombe in the 2008/2009 season, starting in the French Cup Final. When Antonetti arrived for the 2009/2010 season, Thomert was ousted by Marveaux, and was released from his contract in January 2010, when he signed for Le Mans.
