When he arrived from Senegal in 2004, Papa Kouly Diop became a regular in the CFA (French 4th Division) Reserve side under Landry Chauvin. Strong, technically adept, and pacy, he covered all the bases for a modern midfielder. His work was rewarded in Spring 2006, when he signed his first professional contract, along with the likes of Marveaux, Danzé and Kembo-Ekoko. Used in the pre-season friendlies, he was named in the squad for the season-opener against Lille. He entered symbolically in the last minute of the game. That was to be his only appearance, with the competition from Sorlin, Cheyrou, M’Bia, Didot and Mvuemba being too much for him, and he was consigned to a period of inaction. At the end of the Summer transfer window, he was loaned to Tours, and never set foot in Rennes again, mainly down to injury and disappointing performances. He did rediscover his form, however, in Spain, and even claimed a place in the Senegal international squad.
