Pascal Gombault was born in Normandy, and arrived at Stade Rennais in 1977, having spent a couple of seasons at FC Lorient (mainly with the reserves). A giant, imposing goalkeeper, he would go on to make just ten appearances with the professional team in Red and Black. During the 1977/1978 season, he was brought in to compete with Louis Leray for a place in the starting line-up after the departure of Pierrick Hiard to Bastia in December 1977. His debut came on 4th March 1978, on matchday 24 for the home game against Guingamp (2-0 win). He went on to play in the next nine matches up until the penultimate match of the season. His ten appearances in total as a professional saw him concede 19 goals. In that 1977/1978 season, before getting his break in the Second Division, he mostly played for the B and C-Teams of Stade Rennais (5 matches in the Third Division, 6 appearances in Division d'Honneur.) He left Rennes in 1978 to sign for Alençon in the Fourth Division, where he remained until 1983.
