After beginning his footballing days with Cholet, then was developed at Reims between 1976 and 1977, making two appearances for the club in that time. Patrick Rampillon left to play for two seasons at Saint Etienne until 1979. He would only make very few appearances for the Greens, playing in just three league matches, with a further four matches in the Intertoto Cup in 1978. He arrived in Brittany in 1979 to sign for Stade Rennais, with the desire to get more gametime. He would become an undisputed member in the First-Team starting line-up with the club during his first two seasons there. Faced with stiff competition for his position in the team, his playing time fell progressively in his third year at Rennes, so much so, that he would not make a single appearance in his fourth and final season there (1982/1983), when Rennes finished Champions of the French Second Division. He decided to end his playing days at the end of that season, but would join the Academy setup in a coaching role, before becoming the Academy Director several years later.
