On the lookout for a striker in the Summer of 2014, Stade Rennais surprised everyone by signing the Austrian Philipp Hosiner. Prolific marksman in the Austrian championship at Admira Wacker and then with Austria Vienna, Hosiner was never given the chance by Phillipe Montanier, but still managed to score the winning goal against Marseille in the League Cup. On the verge of a loan spell in Cologne in January 2015, he was stopped in his tracks by a tumour in a kidney. After the operation, he returned to action in April, but was never rewarded with an appearance in the top flight. On 22nd June 2015, he was finally loaned to Cologne for a season. After a disjointed season in the Bundesliga, he made a permanent move to Union Berlin on 28th June 2016.
