Christian Gourcuff’s Stade Rennais were looking for a left-footed centre-back, and they signed Ramy Bensebaini from Algerian club Paradou. Having succesfully completed fruitful loan spells at Montpellier and – before that – Lierse, the Algerian international arrived on a 4-year contract on 5th July 2016. Despite clearly having both physical and technical qualities, his first season was far from convincing in the role of centre-back, with some errors which punished his team (either in the form of red/yellow cards, or fouls committed). Sabri Lamouchi decided to use him at left-back from the end of 2017, and he became indispensable to the team. 2019 was an exceptional year for him, with high quality displays, allied to his leadership qualities on the pitch. He scored against Real Betis in the return leg in Seville, and scored the winner in the French Cup Semi-Final in Lyon. He will remain one of the symbols of Rennes French Cup Final triumph on 27th April 2019. His summer got even better, in July 2019 he won the African Cup of Nations with Algeria before getting transferred to Borussia Mönchengladbach for 10 Million Euros on 14th August 2019.
