Born in the Jura region in the East of France, René Chappez began his footballing career with his local club, US Clairvaux-lès-Lacs. Midfielder by trade, he joined Stade Rennais for the 1960/1961 season. He was left to play with the Amateur team at Rennes, and he would only make one solitary appearance for them with the professional team. On 25th December 1960, on matchday 21 of the First Division campaign, he was given a start on the right wing against Rouen (0-1). He did also play a few minutes in the Odorico Cup against Nantes, on 3rd August 1960. He would leave Rennes at the end of the season, and returned to US Clairvaux-lès-Lacs, where he was nicknamed "the bag". He ended his playing days in the 1963/1964 season with RC Lons.
