Born in Saint Nazaire, and after starting his footballing journey with Union-Méan-Penhoët, Richard Grosvalet signed for Stade Rennais in 1977. This midfielder could also play in attack, but only made the odd rare appearance with the Red and Blacks during his two years with the club. It was on matchday 15 of the 1977/1978 season that he finally made his debut with the professionals, given his first start in the home game against Lille on 19th November 1977 in a 2-2 draw. He went on to make six appearances in the eight subsequent matches, of which 5 in the starting line-up, before disappearing progressively from the side. In total, he played in 9 matches in his first season at Rennes. His second season with the Red and Blacks would be even less fruitful in terms of game-time, playing just 5 matches, with 2 starts to his name. Having failed to establish himself at the top, he left Stade Rennais in 1979 to join USM Malakoff in the Paris region.
