Richard Soumah arrived at Stade Rennais FC’s Academy setup from US Créteil in 2000. In the same generation as Yoann Gourcuff and Sylvain Marveaux, he climbed through the ranks in the different age groups of the Youth Teams, and found himself logically progressing to the Reserves in CFA (French 4th Division). Without a contract offer from the club, Soumah joined neighbours Guingamp in 2004. He got his first game-time as a professional in Ligue 2 in 2006. In May 2009, he got his revenge on Stade Rennais, by beating them in the French Cup Final. A year later, he joined Brest to finally discover the top flight in French football.
