Robert Coat was developed by AS Brestoise at the end of the 1940s, and would only experience one season as a professional. This right-winger, born in the Finistère region of Brittany, signed for Stade Rennais in 1961. He started the 1961/1962 season in the starting line-up, but he would gradually find himself edged out of that position by the acute level of competition for his shirt. He made a total of ten appearances for Rennes, two of which came in the Odorico Cup, scoring his one-and-only goal on his league debut against Stade Français on the opening day of the season in the First Division. He would return to his native region, and re-signed for AS Brestoise, staying there until 1970, before eventually finishing his playing days at CO Lesneven.
