After arriving from Angers in 2012, Romain Cagnon joined the Stade Rennais Academy aged 15. This imposing goalkeeper appeared regularly in training with the professional squad under Christian Gourcuff in January 2017 after the departure of Nardi. After being named twice on the bench at the beginning of 2017, he was close to signing his first professional contract with Stade Rennais for one season with an option for a further two in April of that year. In June, the whole contract negotiations were put in doubt as the club were unable to reach an agreement with the player’s agent. So, he left the club which had developed him without every becoming a professional. On 17th October 2017, he finally signed his first professional contract on a one-year deal with Marseille.
