The Israeli goalscorer Shay Holtzman joined Stade Rennais FC in the summer of 1997 after a conclusive trial for Manager Guy David. He arrived with the reputation of a prolific goalscorer, with flattering statistics of 39 goals from 110 appearances. He had already won the Israeli League Title in 1994, and the Israeli National Cup competition in 1997 with Maccabi Haifi and Hapoël Beer Sheva respectively. Unfortunately, he would never get the chance to play at First Team level in a Rennes shirt. With too many players from outside the European Union in their squad, Holtzman was forced to play for the Reserves. He scored 5 goals at that level, and he could have helped out after Jinani left the club, but they went and successfully recruited Kaba Diawara during the Winter transfer window. Holtzman returned to Israel in February 1998 before having mixed fortunes in Austria. He went on to become top scorer in the Israeli Premier League in 2003, 2004 and 2006 and earned a total of 9 caps, scoring once for his country at international level.
