Stéphane Le Garrec arrived at Stade Rennais in 1995, like Goran Pandurovic, to complete the squad in the position of goalkeeper, in a team which has lost, one after the other, Gilles Rousset, Pascal Rousseau and Frédéric Cado. Developed at Lorient, he then made a promising start with Guingamp in Division 2, and after a spell at Valenciennes in National (French 3rd Division), he joined Rennes, to gain his first experience in the top flight. He was rated as third-choice goalkeeper, and he would never get to make an official appearance, although he was named 25 times on the team-sheet. He kickstarted his career at Laval in 1996, and finally got a taste of Ligue 1 at Lorient, where he stayed from 1998 until 2005.
