Stéphane Mahé arrived at Stade Rennais FC in 1996 from Paris Saint Germain. This left-back who had been developed at Auxerre, had already added some titles to his CV: including the French Cup in 1994, and the Cup-Winner’s Cup in 1996. The native of Puteaux came to play on the left side of Rennes’ back-four, which had been left vacant by Carteron, who himself had gone across to the right-back slot, occupied previously by Fugier. With Colleu as Manager, Mahé spent the whole season as first choice, but his performances were sometimes disappointing, in keeping with the rest of the team, who didn’t do as well as expected, in spite of a top-class front-line (André, Guivarc’h and Wiltord). Struggling off the pitch, and sent-off twice during the season, he left Brittany without regret at the end of one season. Mahé signed for Celtic in Scotland, where he won 4 Scottish Cups and 2 Scottish League titles, before finishing his career in Edinburgh with Hearts of Midlothian.
