Prolific goalscorer, scoring a notable brace in the successful 2003 Gambardella Cup run (French FA Youth Cup) beating Strasbourg 4-0 in the Final, Stéphane N’Guéma had already made his professional debut in September 2002. Manager Bergeroo had dropped the disappointing Ivanov early in the season, and gave the Gabonese striker his debut in the derby v Nantes. His first match showed that he was fresh, pacy and carefree, and augured well for the future of this promising 17-year-old. Bölöni made him first choice at the beginning of the 2003/2004 season. Worthy of the confidence that his manager had placed in him, he scored four goals between August and November, but then progressively disappeared from view with the likes of Frei, Piquionne, Vairelles and Briand competing for the same place. After a long injury absence, he returned in the second half of the season, without ever being able to get back to his best. After a loan spell of 6 months at Lorient, and a season without action in 2006/2007, N’Guéma signed for Istres.
