Born in Quimper, Stéphane Rivoal spent many years playing at Brest, his first club as a professional footballer. In 1989, he signed his first professional contract having earned his spurs for a few seasons in the reserve team. In 1991, he joined Second Division side Amiens, before moving on to Stade Rennais a year later. Rivoal was a defender, primarily used as a centre-back. But he would never make a competitive appearance with the professionals, having to settle to reserve team football with the Red and Blacks. After a season of inaction as a professional, he tried his luck with Third Division side, Ancenis. In the subsequent years, he would have spells with a number of amateur clubs, such as Quimper, Avranches, Angers and Libourne Saint-Seurin, where he would end his playing days.
