Born in Quimper, Stéphane Rivoal spent many years playing at Brest, his first club as a professional footballer. In 1989, he signed his first professional contract having earned his spurs for a few seasons in the reserve team. In 1991, he joined Second Division side Amiens, before moving on to Stade Rennais a year later. Rivoal was a defender, primarily used as a centre-back. But he would never make a competitive appearance with the professionals, having to settle to reserve team football with the Red and Blacks. He would eventually leave Rennes in 1994 to join Angers. In the subsequent years, he would have spells with a number of amateur clubs, such as Quimper, Avranches, Angers and Libourne Saint-Seurin, where he would end his playing days.
