Born and developed in Rennes, Sylvain Ripoll made his professional debut in Division 1 aged 19. Defensive midfielder by trade, he gave proud service to his hometown club, mainly through his versatility, which regularly meant that he ended up playing at full-back. In his four seasons at Rennes he notched up 78 appearances, of which 2 were in the First Division, and was loaned to Le Mans in the 1994/1995 season, before signing permanently for Lorient, where he was to play the rest of his career.
