Thierry Robert is a player who came from La Réunion, who - after playing amateur football on his native island - signed for Stade Rennais in 1982, where he would play for the reserves in his first year at the club. This defender, who was also capable of playing in midfield, would only see limited action with the professionals, playing just 5 first-team matches in the First Division. Inspite of gaining more gametime over the course of the two seasons that followed, he never made the breakthrough as first-team regular in the starting line-up. He was thus loaned out to Second Division side, Bourg-sous-la-Roche in 1986, where he would make 33 appearances, but was unable to stop them from being relegated to the Third Division. For the 1987/1988 season, Robert returned to Rennes where he was paired with Garaba in central defence. At the end of the season, however, Rennes were still unconvinced, and decided to release him. He returned to Bourg-sous-la-Roche, where he had had a pretty good season previously, in spite of their relegation. In the end, Robert made 67 appearances for Rennes in 5 seasons. After two seasons with Bourg, he left to join Le Touquet in 1990, where he spent two seasons before hanging up his boots in 1992. He would then return home to his native La Réunion where he would begin a career in football management.
