Tongo Hamed Doumbia joined Stade Rennais FC in June 2009. This tall midfielder had not gone through the usual academy system, neither had he imagined becoming a professional football. But after a single appearance as substitute in Ligue 2 with Châteauroux, he interested Lyon and Rennes, while La Berrichonne invited him to sign his first professional contract. Doumbia chose to go to Rennes to begin his career under the stewardship of Antonetti. After the 2009/2010 when he became a lynchpin for the Reserve team, he was a regular member of the First Team squad the following season 2010/2011. He was sometimes criticised for being clumsy, but still prepared for the 2011/2012 season with the potential of being first-choice, and had a decent season, playing 25 matches, scoring his first two goals against Marseille and Nice. To make room for rising midfield stars Ngando and Doucouré, he was loaned to Wolverhampton Wanderers in July 2012, before obtaining a permanent move to the club in November 2012.
