Despite being a member of the promising generation of youngsters who helped Stade Rennais return to he top flight in 1994, Ulrich Le Pen didn’t have the same fate as his team-mates Huard, Gourvennec or Wiltord. After his first games under Manager Notheaux in 1992, hie left footer began his career as a striker, but making the left side of midfield his home. A fan favourite, without ever being decisive in a Rennes shirt (1 goal in 5 seasons) , this skilful technician was not just a bit-part player, indeed he was a vital player in Le Milinaire’s side, which enabled him to make over 50 appearances in 2 seasons. For the season 1996/1997 he was expected to come of age, but he didn’t perform well under Colleu’s management, and wasn’t able to replace the trio of André, Guivarc’h and Wiltord. Transferred to Laval in 1997, he made a name for himself in the 1st Division from 2002 with Strasbourg, and then with Lorient.
