On the very last day of the 2017 transfer window, Stade Rennais obtained the loan signing (without buyout clause) of Wahbi Khazri from Sunderland. After previous spells with Bastia and Bordeaux, this attacking midfielder arrived to cover for the long-term injury to Yoann Gourcuff as playmaker for Rennes. Mainly used unexpectedly as a centre-forward, Khazri had an excellent season, scoring on his debut in the Vélodrome in Marseille, and scored both goals in a derby victory against Nantes. With qualification for the Europa League obtained, everything pointed towards a continued collaboration with Rennes at the end of his loan. But, against all expectations, he signed for Saint-Etienne after the World Cup in Russia.
