On 22nd June 2015, Stade Rennais signed the midfielder Yacouba Sylla on a 4-year deal. Developed by Caen, the French-Malian midfielder came in to help to bolster the link-play, and compensate for the departure of Vincent Pajot. With a positive experience from his spell at Clermont in Ligue 2, he found himself in greater difficulties at Aston Villa, before a more beneficial loan to Erciyesspor in Turkey in the 2014/2015 season. After 23 matches in a Rennes shirt in the 2015/2016 season, the Captain of Mali’s international team was loaned to Montpellier with a buyout clause on 25th August 2016. Upon his return, Christian Gourcuff made it clear that he didn’t figure in the new Rennes boss’ plans. After three months in the wilderness, and an abortive attempt to sign for Dynamo Zagreb, he was loaned out to Panathinaikos with a buyout clause of 1.5 Million Euros.
