Yves Toupel was a defender, who was developed by Union Méan-Penhoët, a club based in a suburb of Saint-Nazaire. He joined Stade Rennais, aged 19, in 1951. He was in the starting line-up for the first two matches of the 1951/1952 season, but he would never be able to hold down a place in the Red and Blacks first eleven thereafter. He played very few matches each season with the professionals, and was mostly left to play for the Amateur team for the 1952/1953 season, not making the slightest appearance in the First Division that year. He was mainly seen as a stop-gap solution, but he would still get progressively more game-time as the years went by, although never making it as a first-choice regular. He would eventually leave Rennes in 1957, finishing his career with the Etoile Sportive des Aiglons de Brive, initially as a player, and then ultimately as Manager.
