Division 2
10th
Coupe de France
Round of 64
After a 1986/1987 season which concluded with bottom spot in the 1st Division and relegation as a consequence, Stade Rennais saw it's squad completely overhauled at the beginning of the 1987/1988 season. With 18 players departing the Red and Blacks, most of the First-Team regulars had left in order to reduce the clubs outgoings on wages. On the incoming side, 13 new players signed for the club, including some experienced players such as Audrain, Garaba and Tlemçani. The management team had also changed as a result of relegation. Raymond Kéruzoré arrived to take over from Patrick Rampillon. The season itself was not particularly glorious, and Rennes spent virtually all the season in mid-table in the Second Division. Stade Rennais found it particularly hard to pick up points on their travels, without a single victory to their name, but that was compensated for by a decent home record. In the end, Rennes would finish in a disappointing 10th position, with 11 wins, 10 draws and 13 defeats. In the French Cup, Rennes were eliminated in the Round of 64 by local neighbours Quimper, to add to a disappointing season overall.
