Round of 16
There was a lot of movement during the close season with the departs of First Team Manager Antonetti and Director of Football Pierre Dréossi. The new-look management team had the duo Montanier and Troin on the coaching staff, and Buisine looking after recruitment. His most urgent task was finding new players, as was demonstrated by the late recruitment of Kadir, Emerson, M’Bengue and Romero. On the pitch, the start of the season was acceptable, with 12 points taken from 7 Ligue 1 matches. The machine started to go off the rails in the autumn with two derby defeats at the hands of Nantes and Guingamp. In spite of some excellent performances such as a 5-0 win at Toulouse, 3-0 victories at Nantes and Bastia and a 2-0 win at Lyon, Stade Rennais had to wait until matchday 36 when an unexpected 2-1 victory at the Parc de Princes against Paris Saint Germain secured their Ligue 1 status for a local record 21st season. After suffering defeat to Bordeaux in the last 16 of the League Cup, Rennes made it to the Stade de France for the third time in five years for the French Cup Final. But there was to be yet more heartache in the quest for the trophy last won in 1971, falling to a deserved defeat against Guingamp (0-2) on the 3rd May.
