Stade Rennais’ 2018/2019 season is without a doubt the best season in the club’s history, winning the French Cup and achieving a best-ever run in the Europa League. The summer saw the club lose several key players, such as Gnagnon, Prcic and Khazri. On the arrivals side, Da Silva, Grenier, Niang and Ben Arfa joined the club. The club had a positive start to the season with 7 points on the board before the Europa League campaign began to attract attention. With the team struggling in Ligue 1 and virtually eliminated in the Europa League, inspite doing the double against Jablonec, the club decided to change manager at the beginning of December with Julien Stéphan replacing Sabri Lamouchi. That was a turning point with the team enjoying success after success, qualifying after beating Astana, and then Betis, Rennes qualified for the last 16 of the Europa League for the first time in the club’s history. Having digested the subsequent elimination by Arsenal, Rennes went on to beat the top three sides in France of the day (Lille, Lyon and then Paris Saint Germain) to win their first title since 1983 (Champions of the French Second Division). On the 27th April at the Stade de France, the Red and Blacks trailed 0-2 to the Paris Saint Germain of Neymar and Mbappé, and turned things around to win through a penalty shoot-out in the French Cup Final. Once the party was over, Rennes ended their season with two straight league wins, which enabled M’Baye Niang, the team’s main man at the end of the year, to help his side finish in the top half of the table (10th)
