Born in Paris, Alain Doaré is a defender, who having gained experience in the Academy setup at En Avant Guingamp, began his professional career with Stade Rennais as of 1980, aged 17 when he made his debut on 16th May 1981 in the First Team against Caen in the Second Division. It would be his one and only appearance that season, as he didn't end up signing his first professional contract until two years later, in 1983, which happened to be the season when Rennes achieved promotion back to the top flight of French football. He featured regularly in the starting line-up as left-back, but was unable to prevent his side from sliding back into the Second Division. In the 1984/1985 season, Rennes made it to the promotion play-offs to bounce back into the First Division. Doaré made a name for himself by scoring the crucial penalty which secured a return to the top flight for the Red and Blacks. In the 1986/1987 season, he faced competition from Dominique Marais for the role of right-back, and would play a lesser role than in previous seasons. After a catastrophic season, Rennes were relegated once more to the Second Division. The following season, however - in 1987/1988 - he would still be a regular starter at right-back. He accumulated a total of 139 appearances for the club, of which 76 came in the First Division, 49 in the Second Division. He would leave Rennes at the end of this season, to sign for Lille in the First Division, where he would go on to spend two seasons before finishing his playing career.
