In the Summer of 2008, Asamoah Gyan arrived at Stade Rennais FC from Udinese for 8.4 Million Euros. Historic first goalscorer in a World Cup for Ghana, “Babyjet” never managed to fulfil his potential in Italy. Often injured, Gyan didn’t do much to change his reputation when he first arrived in Rennes, and was on the treatment table in August. Back in December, he scored his first goal in France at Lorient in a 2-1 victory, but he suffered physically in each game. After being taken care of by Rennes physical fitness staff, he started the 2009/2010 season in top form. A first-choice striker among the attacking options in the squad (Sow, Bangoura, Pagis and Briand), he was in irresistible form throughout the season, scoring 13 goals, and improved Antonetti’s side with his aerial prowess, his awareness of the where the goal was, and his relaxed style. Having reached the final of the African Cup of Nations in January, he came within an ace of the World Cup semi-finals in June. A target for the Premier League clubs, Gyan was allowed to join Sunderland on the last day of the transfer window for 16 Million Euros.
