César arrived in Rennes for 6 Million Euros during the famous Summer of 2000, the summer where Le Guen and Lefillatre chose to spend all their pocket money, and that mainly in Brazil. Alongside compatriots Fabiano, Lucas and Vander, César took over from David Sommeil - who had transferred to Bordeaux) in the heart of the Rennes defence. He started the season in convincing form, his aerial game and technical ability stood out, and he justified his status as Brazilian international (winner of the Copa America in 1999), which begged the question as to why he had failed at his previous club, Paris Saint Germain. The icing on the cake was that he scored two goals in his first season in Red and Black (coincidentally, both goals came in the 7th minute.) The team finished 6th and qualified for the Intertoto, but during the close season, Paul Le Guen left the club, and was replaced by Christian Gourcuff. The Manager from Morbihan, wasn’t a great fan of the Brazilian’s defensive style, and preferred Lamine Diatta to César. Faced with this situation, César returned to his home country in January 2002, and continued his career there with the most prestigious clubs.
