Like many, François Masson joined the Stade Rennais Academy aged just 13. This Breton could play in any of the advanced roles in midfield, but was unable to make his mark at his hometown club. He joined Angers, but didn’t succeed in his quest for professional football there either. In 1999, he finally got the game-time he deserved at Pontivy in CFA (French 4th Division), and caught the eye of the professionals at Cannes in the Second Division, where he finally managed the breakthrough into the professional game, before having spells at numerous clubs in Ligue 2 and National (French 3rd Division). In the 2010/2011 season, his path crossed that of Rennes once more, playing for Cannes in the French Cup, but he was on the receiving end of a 0-7 thrashing.
