Grégory Malicki was transferred from Niort to Stade Rennais in June 1999. Brought in as an understudy for Revault, the new arrival in Rennes, knew that he would at least be starting in goal for the early part of the season whilst waiting for the first-choice keeper to return from a cruciate knee ligament injury obtained at the end of the 1998/1999 season. Malicki got an early debut in the Intertoto Cup, and did well, particularly in the two-legged final against Juventus. In the league, things were much less positive, with three straight defeats to open the campaign, including a 0-3 defeat at Nancy, where Malicki got sent-off. Debec took over for the 5-0 romp against Sedan, and with Le Guen not wanting to change a winning team, Malicki had to sit things out until Revault returned. Having failed to make the most of his opportunity, he was loaned out to Créteil for the Winter, and then transferred to Lille in 2001.
