Herita Ilunga became a tried-and-test professional but never had his chance at Stade Rennais. He arrived, aged 16, from Amiens and the Congolese left-back played for the Reserve side in CFA (French 4th Division) in 2000. Having spent two disjointed seasons at the club, and despite his undoubted potential, the club released him without offering a professional contract, mainly due to the presence of Réveillère, Escudé and Paisley in the squad. Ilunga left to join Espanyol where he made his first steps as a professional footballer, before making his mark in France at Saint-Etienne, and then Toulouse. In January 2013, Ilunga was out of contract after his departure from Doncaster, and re-joined Stade Rennais where he made 5 appearances in the second half of the season.
