Jean Giovannelli was born in the south of Brittany in the Morbihan region. After being developed at US Montagnarde, Giovanelli began his career as an amateur at Véloce Vannes. The midfielder was recruited by Stade Rennais in 1960, but was primarily left with the Red and Blacks' Reserves. He did would still make a few appearances with the professionals. He debut came against Nîmes on 9th October 1960, on matchday 9 in the First Division season. He would go on to play in the following fixture, but would not make any further appearances with the professionals until the following season. The following season would finally see him gain more gametime, albeit still only totalling five matches. He would leave Rennes in 1963 to join Laval for several years. He finished his playing days with US Montagnard, going from player, to Player-Manager to President. Teacher by trade, Giovannelli would succeed his father François as Mayor of his hometown, Inzinzac-Lochrist, between 1977-2001. He would also go into politics, becoming a Socialist MP in Morbihan from 1988-1993.
