Born in Quimper, Jérémy Gélin arrived in Rennes in 2012 after a spell at the Pre-Training centre at Ploufragan. As a defensive midfielder or centre-back, and technically gifted, the Breton was one of the great hopes at Rennes’ Academy. A few days after Rennes Reserve team’s promotion to CFA (French 4th Division), he signed his first professional contract of 3 years on Friday 13th May 2016. During his formative years at Rennes, Gélin was called up to the different French
Youth Team age categories, totalling 28 caps with 1 goal to his name from U17 through to U21 level, In the 2017/2018 season, Gélin quickly established himself in the heart of the Rennes defence, alongside Joris Gnagnon in a season which finished with qualification for the Europa League. In the 2018/2019 season, he suffered from the competition with Da Silva and Mexer, He became a utility player, playing in midfield and at centre back. After a low-key season in 2019/2020, the Breton player was loaned - without a buyout clause - to Royal Antwerp on 5th October 2020. After a decent loan spell in Belgium, he suffered a serious knee injury whilst in training for the French Olympic squad for the Olympic Games in Tokyo. After a season out of the game, recovering from his cruciate knee injury, he was left to find a new club in 2022 at the end of his contract, having made 84 appearances for Rennes, scoring just one - albeit crucial and exquisite - goal in that time (the extra-time winner in the French Cup tie at Angers in December 2020)
