Goalscorer at the World Cup in 2014 in Brazil, the Colombian international Juan Fernando Quintero arrived on loan with a buyout clause at Stade Rennais on 31st August 2015. This technically gifted midfielder arrived from FC Porto, where the competition from notably former Rennes player Yacine Brahimi had become too much. His above-average technical ability created justified expectations, and his first appearances in a Rennes shirt were really promising. But struggling physically, he found it difficult to play consecutive matches, or to accept the choices of his successive Managers: Montanier, then Courbis. In March 2016, after just one goal and two assists in a Rennes shirt, his loan stay was cut short. He hoped to head to Brazil to bounce back with Internacional Porto Alegre, but found himself back at Porto after negotiations broke down.
